One of the most internationally prestigious contemporary sculptors, as evidenced by the numerous awards and honors he received, as well as the presence of his work in countless museums and public spaces around the world, most notably in Barcelona on the facade of the Sagrada Família church.
A versatile artist, Subirachs excelled primarily in sculpture, but also in other techniques such as painting, drawing, printmaking, poster art, tapestry, and book illustration.
In his work, Subirachs synthesized technical mastery and the purity of materials and textures with an eager desire to communicate and express a symbolic, transcendental language through the creation of his own universe of iconographic references.
His most monumental and well-known creation is the Passion Facade of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, a project on which he worked for over two decades (1987–2009), crafting more than a hundred figures in stone and bronze.
